No cleanup, badge, score, streak, statistic, or community contribution is worth risking your safety. When in doubt, leave the item alone and report it.
CleanBlock Civic is a community volunteer platform. We do not train or certify volunteers for hazardous material handling. These rules are written for a broad public audience — they are direct and simple on purpose.
Who These Rules Are For
General participants vs. trained professionals
General participants
Most CleanBlock Civic volunteers are community members, not trained professionals. If you are a general participant, do not handle hazardous items. Leave them, keep others away, and report them.
Trained, authorized, and equipped personnel
If you are a trained professional (such as a hazmat worker, medical waste handler, or law enforcement officer), follow your training, your employer's procedures, and all applicable laws and regulations for your work. CleanBlock Civic does not train or certify anyone for hazardous material handling.
Do Not Touch — Leave It and Report It
Do not pick up, touch, or closely inspect these items
Needles, syringes, or any medical sharp
Suspected drugs or drug paraphernalia
Chemicals or unknown liquids and substances
Biological or medical waste
Weapons or ammunition
Dead animals
Items near active homeless encampments
Anything that looks, feels, or smells unsafe
Anything you cannot clearly identify
If you see one of these items:
- Leave it exactly where it is.
- Keep other people and animals away when you can do so safely.
- Report it through the app or to your local authority.
Do not touch or closely inspect an item just to figure out what it is. If you are unsure, treat it as hazardous and report it.
No Credit for Risk
CleanBlock Civic will never ask you to pick up a hazardous item to complete a cleanup, earn a badge, increase a score, or add to community statistics. There is no reward for taking a risk. If an item is dangerous, reporting it is the correct action — not collecting it.
Safe Cleanup Practices
Follow these guidelines every time
Wear gloves at all times — never handle litter with bare hands
Use grabber tools when possible to avoid direct contact
Stay visible near roads — wear bright or reflective clothing
Never work near active traffic without proper barriers
Clean with a buddy — avoid isolated areas alone
Don't enter private property without clear permission
Contact local authorities for dangerous or illegal situations
Stay hydrated and take breaks in extreme weather
Know the location of the nearest medical facility before you start

CleanBlock Civic, its administrators, and partners are not responsible for injuries, accidents, property damage, or legal consequences arising from cleanup activities. Volunteers are responsible for their own safety and for following local laws. Only trained, authorized, and equipped personnel should handle hazardous materials, and only according to their training and applicable laws.
